Manchester United Vs Brighton

Brighton stun Man Utd with dramatic 99th-minute penalty winner

Missed chances prove costly as United's Champions League hopes suffer blow

Premier League | 4 May 2023

Brighton & Hove Albion produced a stunning late show to beat Manchester United 1-0 in a Premier League clash at the Amex Stadium on Thursday.

The Seagulls were awarded a penalty in the 99th minute after Neal Maupay was brought down by Scott McTominay. Pascal Gross stepped up to take the spot-kick and sent David de Gea the wrong way.

The result leaves United in sixth place, three points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with just three games remaining. Brighton, meanwhile, moved up to eighth place, six points behind seventh-placed Chelsea.

It was a disappointing night for United, who had the better of the chances but failed to make them count. Bruno Fernandes had a great opportunity to put the visitors ahead in the first half, but he fired wide from close range.

Marcus Rashford also went close in the second half, but his shot was well saved by Robert Sanchez. Brighton had their own chances, with Maupay and Leandro Trossard both testing De Gea.

But it was Gross who had the final say, sending De Gea the wrong way with his penalty to secure a dramatic victory for Brighton.

The result is a major blow to United's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. The Red Devils are now three points behind Tottenham, who have a game in hand, and they face a tough task to finish in the top four.

Brighton, meanwhile, will be delighted with the victory. The Seagulls have now won three of their last four games and they are closing in on a top-half finish.
